Welcome to the official Ledger.com/Start™ setup and onboarding experience. Begin your secure crypto journey with the trusted hardware wallet that keeps your assets safe and in your control. Follow this detailed guide to set up, verify, and use your Ledger device safely.
Ledger hardware wallets are physical devices designed to store and protect your cryptocurrency private keys offline. Unlike online wallets or software solutions, Ledger devices ensure your keys never leave the secure chip, making them immune to online hacking attempts. With millions of users worldwide, Ledger offers the most secure and intuitive solution to safeguard your digital assets.
Ledger.com/Start™ serves as your official onboarding destination to activate, initialize, and understand your new Ledger device. Whether you are using a Ledger Nano X, Nano S Plus, or Nano S, this portal provides verified guidance for each step of your setup.
Before starting the setup process, make sure you have the following ready:
⚠️ Important: Only use official links and software from Ledger.com. Never enter your 24-word recovery phrase anywhere online or on your computer. Your recovery phrase is your only backup.
When you unbox your Ledger hardware wallet, verify that the packaging is sealed and untampered. Ledger devices are shipped in secure packaging, without any pre-set recovery phrases. If you receive a pre-filled recovery sheet, contact Ledger support immediately.
Connect your Ledger to your computer using the included USB cable. Follow the on-screen instructions displayed on the device. You’ll be prompted to choose between two options: creating a new wallet or restoring an existing one.
To set up your wallet from scratch, select “Set up as new device.” The device will guide you through creating a new wallet and generating your recovery phrase. Carefully write down each word in the order shown. Double-check for accuracy—this recovery phrase is the master key to your funds.
The device will ask you to confirm the order of your 24 words. This ensures you have recorded them correctly. Store your recovery sheet in a secure, offline location (preferably a fireproof safe). Never share it with anyone.
You’ll be prompted to create a PIN code (4 to 8 digits). This PIN is required every time you access your Ledger device. Choose something unique but memorable.
Once your device setup is complete, download the official Ledger Live application from Ledger.com/Start. Ledger Live is the management software that connects your hardware wallet to the blockchain network, allowing you to view balances, send, receive, and stake crypto assets securely.
After installing, open Ledger Live and select “Get Started.” Choose your device model and follow the on-screen prompts. You’ll connect your device, verify it, and ensure it’s genuine through the Ledger security check.
Once verified, you can add accounts for Bitcoin, Ethereum, or other supported cryptocurrencies. Each account represents a blockchain address controlled by your private keys inside the Ledger device. Ledger supports over 5,500 coins and tokens across multiple blockchains.
Your Ledger device provides world-class security, but your actions also play a crucial role. Follow these guidelines to maintain maximum protection:
Ledger never asks for your recovery phrase or PIN. If anyone requests it—even claiming to be Ledger Support—it’s a scam.
Once set up, you can use your Ledger wallet to send, receive, and manage cryptocurrencies directly through Ledger Live. Transactions must always be verified on your device’s physical screen before approval. This ensures no malicious software can alter transaction details.
To receive funds, open Ledger Live, select your crypto account, and click “Receive.” Verify the address displayed on your Ledger device matches the one in Ledger Live. Once confirmed, share the address with the sender.
When sending, enter the recipient’s address, amount, and network fees. Confirm the transaction on your device screen. Once approved, the transaction is broadcast to the blockchain.
Ledger Live allows staking of select cryptocurrencies, enabling you to earn rewards while maintaining control of your keys. Supported assets include Ethereum, Polkadot, Tezos, and more.
Ledger regularly releases firmware updates to enhance performance and security. You’ll be notified in Ledger Live when updates are available. Before updating, ensure your recovery phrase is backed up. Never disconnect the device during the update process.
If your device is lost, stolen, or damaged, you can restore your wallet using your 24-word recovery phrase on a new Ledger device. Simply select “Restore from recovery phrase” during setup and enter the words in the correct order.
This process restores your private keys and access to your assets. As long as your recovery phrase remains secure, your funds are safe.
